Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi has celebrated his nation’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations victory, insisting the win matters most despite the controversy surrounding the Confederation of African Football’s ruling against Senegal.
Paris Saint-Germain star Hakimi spoke openly about Morocco’s AFCON 2025 triumph during a recent appearance on The Bridge podcast alongside Kylian Mbappé and Aurélien Tchouaméni.
The victory came after the CAF Appeal Board awarded Morocco the title following Senegal’s decision to walk off the pitch during the final. The ruling declared Senegal forfeited, recording a 3-0 win for Morocco.
Hakimi, who captained the Atlas Lions to the title, said: “We are very happy. I have been waiting for this moment for a long time. Even if the victory came this way… we won.”
The Moroccan international also reflected on his personal journey, explaining why he chose to represent Morocco over Spain on the international stage.
The podcast further highlighted issues beyond the trophy, including Mbappé sharing his experiences of racist abuse during the 2021 European Championship, underscoring the ongoing challenges of discrimination in football.
Despite the controversy, Hakimi’s focus remains on celebrating Morocco’s achievement and inspiring the next generation of players.
