Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohamed led a major workshop on Thursday aimed at turning the SportPesa Premier League into the number one league in Africa.
The meeting brought together key football stakeholders in Kenya to openly discuss why the league has lagged behind others on the continent—and what must change to move it forward.
For years, the Kenyan Premier League has struggled to grow, with challenges in areas such as marketing, infrastructure, and fan engagement. But during the workshop, leaders agreed that the time for change is now.
Speaking during the session, Hussein stressed the need for a new mindset, saying the league must aim higher and work harder to compete with Africa’s best.
The workshop created a platform for honest discussion, with participants examining the league’s weaknesses and identifying practical solutions. The focus was on building a strong, competitive, and commercially viable league.
Among the key topics discussed were improving marketing and commercial activities, expanding broadcast reach through partners like Azam TV Kenya and Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, and learning from top leagues across Africa through benchmarking.
Stakeholders also looked at improving safety and security in stadiums, upgrading infrastructure, and finding better ways to attract and retain fans.
The workshop also emphasised the importance of strong partnerships between clubs, sponsors, and football bodies.
Title sponsors SportPesa, security agencies, the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK), the Kenya Footballers Welfare Association, and the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) were all represented.
FKF officials, club representatives, and other football leaders agreed that success will require teamwork, discipline, and long-term commitment.
The meeting ended with a shared message this is just the beginning of a new journey. With the right plans and unity, the SportPesa League now aims to rise, compete, and eventually become the top football league in Africa.
