Kenya’s national men’s rugby sevens team, Shujaa, made a strong start to their HSBC SVNS II campaign with a 38-7 win over Germany in São Paulo, Brazil.
Shujaa went into the match determined to take control early, knowing a good result would boost their chances of finishing in the top three.
However, it was Germany who struck first, scoring in the second minute through Jakob Dipper to take a 7-0 lead.
Kenya quickly responded. Patrick Odongo scored after a well-placed kick from Samuel Asati, and the conversion levelled the match at 7-7.
From there, Shujaa took full control. Vincent Onyala crossed the line after a smooth team move, adding the conversion to give Kenya a 14-7 lead. Odongo then grabbed his second try after a good pass from co-captain George Ooro, pushing the score to 21-7.
After the break, Kenya remained dominant. Onyala added another try before Ooro sprinted through to extend the lead to 31-7. Dennis Abukuse sealed the win with a final try under the posts, completing a commanding 38-7 victory.
Despite a brief setback when Kevin Wekesa was sent to the sin bin, Shujaa stayed disciplined and in control throughout the match.
Meanwhile, it was a tough start for Kenya’s women’s team, the Lionesses, who lost 19-12 to Argentina in their opening match of the tournament.
Shujaa will now look to build on this strong performance as they continue their push for promotion, while the Lionesses aim to bounce back in their next game.
