Ferdinand Omanyala, Timothy Cheruiyot and Emmanuel Wanyonyi are among top stars expected to light up the Kip Keino Classic as the 2026 edition takes a bold new direction with a night competition at Nyayo National Stadium.
For the first time, the popular athletics meet will be held under floodlights, promising a fresh and exciting experience for both athletes and fans. The event is scheduled for April 24, running from late afternoon into the evening in what organisers hope will create a lively and electric atmosphere.
The new format comes after Absa Bank Kenya confirmed a Sh35 million sponsorship, aimed at improving not just the competition but also the overall fan experience. The evening setting is expected to attract more spectators and give the event a global feel similar to other top athletics meets around the world.
All eyes will be on Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala in the sprints, while former world champion Timothy Cheruiyot and Olympic gold medalist Emmanuel Wanyonyi will lead the charge in middle-distance races. Their presence is expected to draw huge local support.
International athletes will also feature, including America’s Dalilah Muhammad and javelin star Thomas Röhler, adding more strength to the competition.
Organisers have also introduced an Under-20 category, giving young Kenyan athletes a chance to compete alongside established stars. This move is aimed at nurturing future talent and making the event more inclusive.
Fans will enjoy free entry to the stadium, a decision meant to encourage more Kenyans to attend and support local athletes.
The upgraded track at Nyayo Stadium is another key highlight. Officials believe the new surface will support faster races, especially in the 100m and 200m, raising hopes of record-breaking performances.
The Kip Keino Classic is part of the World Athletics Continental Gold Tour and continues to grow in status each year. With strong sponsorship and a new night-time setting, the 2026 edition is shaping up to be one of the most exciting yet.
As the countdown begins, Nairobi is ready to host a memorable night of athletics, with Kenya’s biggest stars leading the way under the lights.
