The 2026 Kip Keino Classic will be held under floodlights for the first time, as organisers move the event to the evening to boost fan experience and global TV viewership.
The World Continental Tour Gold meet, which has traditionally been staged during the day on Saturdays, will now take place on Friday, April 24, at Nyayo National Stadium from 4pm to 9pm.
Race Director Barnaba Korir says the change is aimed at reaching a wider audience and improving television coverage. He explained that evening hours allow more fans to watch both at home and inside the stadium.
Korir also noted that the new format will bring a different feel to the event by combining athletics with entertainment, promising fans a lively and engaging atmosphere.
Over the years, the Kip Keino Classic has attracted top international stars, including Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Justin Gatlin, and Sha’Carri Richardson, cementing its place as one of the top athletics meets in the region.
Meanwhile, World Athletics official Owen Malone believes Nairobi’s high altitude will once again provide ideal conditions for fast performances, especially in sprint races due to reduced air resistance.
Preparations are already ongoing at Nyayo Stadium, with officials working to ensure the track and equipment meet global standards ahead of the competition.
