Harambee Starlets lose to Australia’s Matildas in FIFA Series final in Nairobi

Harambee Starlets’ dream of lifting the FIFA Series trophy ended in disappointment after they lost 2-0 to Australia in the final played at Nyayo Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Matildas showed their quality when it mattered most, with goals from Chelsea’s Sam Kerr and Everton’s Clare Wheeler sealing victory and handing Australia the Women’s FIFA Series 2026 title.

Kenya had reached the final after beating India 2-0 in the semi-final, while Australia booked their place with a dominant 5-0 win over Malawi.

The match started with high energy as fans filled Nyayo Stadium, creating a lively atmosphere. However, Australia took control early, putting the Starlets under pressure from the first minutes. Kenya’s defence looked shaky, but they managed to survive the early attacks.

Despite the pressure, the Starlets grew into the game. Shalyne Opisa and Fasila Adhiambo led Kenya’s attacking efforts, forcing saves from Australian goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold.

Kenya’s best chance came just before halftime when Adhiambo broke through on goal, but her shot hit the post, denying the hosts a crucial opener.

Moments later, Australia punished Kenya. A defensive mix-up allowed Kerr to score from close range, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead heading into the break.

In the second half, Australia remained dominant. Their pressure paid off in the 54th minute when Wheeler finished a well-worked move to double the lead and put the game beyond Kenya’s reach.

Starlets tried to respond, with Opisa and substitute Elizabeth Mideva creating chances, but they could not break down Australia’s solid defence.

In the end, Australia controlled the game and comfortably saw out the win to lift the trophy, while Kenya settled for second place.

Speaking after the match, head coach Beldine Odemba praised the tournament, saying it gave the team valuable experience against top opposition.

The four-nations tournament, which also featured India and Malawi, was part of Kenya’s preparations for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Despite the loss, the Starlets showed promise and will take lessons from the defeat as they continue to build for future competitions.
