Kenya has received a major boost in its football development ambitions after the government praised the ongoing FIFA Series tournament, terming it a strong sign of growing international confidence in the country.
Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Salim Mvurya has lauded the initiative by FIFA, saying it aligns with the government’s efforts to elevate the game locally while building global partnerships.
Speaking after a high-level meeting with FIFA’s Deputy Chief of Member Associations and Regional Director for Africa Gelson Fernandes, Mvurya described the tournament as a vote of confidence in Kenya’s football progress.
“On behalf of the government, this is a clear indication that Kenya is moving in the right direction in football development. The visit by FIFA and CAF leaders last year, followed by this FIFA Series, shows continued trust in our systems,” said Mvurya.
The meeting also brought together Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohamed alongside top officials from regional football bodies, highlighting the growing collaboration across the continent.
Mvurya emphasised that the FIFA Series comes at a crucial time as Kenya prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, noting that the tournament provides a valuable learning platform in event organization and capacity building.
“We are seeing more Kenyans involved in organizing this tournament, which is key in building local expertise. This is the kind of exposure we need as we gear up for bigger assignments like AFCON,” he added.
On his part, Fernandes reaffirmed FIFA’s commitment to supporting football development in Kenya, particularly in infrastructure. He revealed that plans for a Technical Centre in Machakos are on course, following earlier agreements between FIFA and the Kenyan government.
“We have a clear plan, and discussions are ongoing to finalize key details. The Technical Centre is a priority, and we are also looking at launching a FIFA Arena in the country soon,” Fernandes said.
He also pointed to the need to expand football infrastructure beyond Nairobi, including ongoing discussions around facilities in Mombasa, to tap into talent across the country.
The FIFA Series tournament, currently being staged in Kenya, is not only providing competitive action on the pitch but also serving as a stepping stone in strengthening the country’s readiness to host major continental events.
