India beat Malawi to finish third in 2026 FIFA Series in Nairobi

The Indian women’s football team ended the FIFA Series 2026 campaign on a high note after a hard-fought 3-2 win over Malawi in the third-place play-off held at Nyayo National Stadium on Wednesday.

The Blue Tigresses showed strong character and attacking intent to secure victory, with goals from Astam Oraon, Aveka Singh, and substitute Priyadharshini Selladurai sealing the win in an exciting match.

India made a bright start and took the lead in the 18th minute. A well-delivered corner from Nirmala Devi caused confusion in the Malawi defence, allowing Astam Oraon to react quickly and score her first international goal.

Malawi responded well and grew into the game, enjoying more possession. Their efforts paid off in the 42nd minute when Khumalo Ireen scored a stunning free-kick to level the match at 1-1.

However, India quickly regained control. Just before half-time, Aveka Singh finished off a well-worked move with a calm volley to restore India’s lead, also marking her first goal for the national team.

The second half saw Malawi come out stronger. They equalised again in the 60th minute through Henry Deborah, who reacted fastest to a loose ball inside the box to make it 2-2.

With the match heading towards a possible penalty shootout, India found the winning goal late in the game.

In the 84th minute, substitute Priyadharshini Selladurai showed great skill and composure to cut inside and fire a precise shot into the bottom corner, giving Malawi’s goalkeeper no chance.

India held on in the final minutes to secure a deserved victory and finish third in the tournament.

The Indians had earlier lost 2-0 to hosts Kenya in the semi-finals. The FIFA Series aims to give teams more international exposure through competitive matches, and India will take plenty of positives from their strong finish in Nairobi.
