Cyclists battle for UCI Gravel World Championships slots at Hells Gate in Naivasha

Cyclists battle for UCI Gravel World Championships slots at Hells Gate in Naivasha

Cyclists from Kenya and across Africa will have a golden chance to qualify for the UCI Gravel World Championships when the second leg of the 2026 LOOP Safari Gravel Series takes place at Hell’s Gate National Park in Naivasha on June 13.

The Naivasha event has been confirmed as a UCI Gravel World Series Qualifier, making it one of only four qualifier races in Africa this year alongside events in South Africa and Namibia.

More than 700 riders are expected to compete in the 20km, 60km and 111km races after the opening leg in Limuru attracted a record 822 participants earlier this year.

To secure qualification for the World Championships in Nannup, Western Australia in October, riders must finish in the top 25 percent of their category, while the top three riders in every official category will automatically book their slots.

Amani Project Coordinator Troy Barrie said the UCI recognition is a major milestone for cycling in Kenya and the continent.

“UCI accreditation transforms this race from a regional showpiece into an internationally recognised competition. It creates real pathways for African riders to earn UCI points and be seen on the global stage,” said Barrie.

Barrie added that the event will also help grow the sport through investment and development opportunities for young riders.

“That exposure not only raises the standard of racing here, but it also brings investment, development opportunities, and inspiration for the next generation of cyclists in Kenya and across the continent,” he added.

The winners of the men’s and women’s 111km races will each pocket Sh20,000, while the winning team will walk away with Sh125,000.

LOOP Digital Financial Services CEO Eric Muriuki said the event is helping place Kenya firmly on the global cycling map.

“The UCI accreditation for our Naivasha edition is good for Kenya's growing prominence in the global cycling arena. We are providing our athletes with a pathway to international recognition, while at the same time showcasing the unparalleled beauty of our country to the world,” said Muriuki.

He also invited international riders to experience the unique competition in Naivasha.

“We are incredibly proud to bring an event of this caliber to Naivasha, and we invite cyclists from all corners of the globe to experience this unique blend of competition and adventure,” he added.

Last year, Belgium’s Lukas Mzewski won the men’s elite race while Canada’s Haley Smith claimed victory in the women’s category.

The route will start at Sulmac Village near Lake Naivasha and will feature gravel roads, red clay, single tracks and game trails around Hell's Gate National Park.

The LOOP Safari Gravel Series is organized by The Amani Project with support from LOOP Digital Financial Services.
