Patson Daka struck deep into injury time to save Zambia from defeat as the Chipolopolo held Mali to a 1-1 draw in their opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Monday night in Casablanca.
The Leicester City striker showed great determination in the second minute of added time, throwing himself at a Mathews Banda cross to head home a dramatic equaliser and earn Zambia an unlikely point in Group A.
Mali had looked set to claim all three points after dominating large spells of the match at the Stade Mohammed V. The West Africans created the better chances and were rewarded just after the hour mark when Lassine Sinayoko fired home from close range after Zambia failed to clear a corner.
Earlier in the game, Mali missed a golden chance to take the lead from the penalty spot. El Bilal Touré’s effort was saved by Zambia goalkeeper Willard Mwanza after a VAR review ruled that Banda had fouled Nene Dorgeles in the box.
Despite spending much of the match under pressure, Zambia stayed in the contest and were finally rewarded at the death.
Banda made amends for the earlier penalty by delivering a perfect cross, which Daka met with a brave header to stun Mali.
The result extends Zambia’s long AFCON winless run to 10 matches since lifting the trophy in 2012. However, the late goal could provide a confidence boost as they look to revive their campaign.
The draw will please hosts Morocco, who sit top of Group A after beating Comoros 2-0 on Sunday. Mali face Morocco next in Rabat on Friday, while Zambia will turn their attention to a must-win clash against Comoros.
