Shujaa shift focus to World Series as coach Wambua lauds team’s progress

Shujaa shift focus to World Series as coach Wambua lauds team’s progress

Kenya’s national men’s rugby sevens team, Shujaa, has now shifted focus to the HSBC SVNS World Championship Series after sealing qualification in style, with head coach Kevin Wambua praising the squad’s effort and belief.

The tactician congratulated the team for their resilience throughout the HSBC SVNS II campaign, noting that their consistency has put them in a strong position ahead of the global playoff stage.

“I want to congratulate the boys for the hardwork and discipline they have shown this season. It has not been easy, but they have played with heart and belief to achieve this milestone,” said Wambua.

Shujaa will now face top-tier sides including Fiji, South Africa, New Zealand, Argentina, Australia, France, Great Britain, and Spain in a three-leg World Championship Series that will determine promotion to Division One for the 2026/27 season.

The series will kick off in Hong Kong from April 17 to 19, before moving to Valladolid, Spain, and later concluding in Bordeaux, France.

Despite the tough challenge ahead, Wambua expressed optimism in the team’s ability to compete at the highest level.

“We are optimistic going into the World Championship Series. The players have shown they can compete against strong sides, and now it’s about staying focused and taking our chances,” he added.

Shujaa booked their place in the championship stage after an impressive run in São Paulo, where they recorded dominant wins over Germany and Canada, before beating Uruguay and USA to secure a third-place finish.

Their performance in Brazil capped off a consistent season that also saw them finish third in Nairobi and Montevideo, before claiming second place in São Paulo.

With confidence growing and belief within the squad, Wambua has urged his players to remain grounded as they eye a return to the top tier.

“This is just the beginning. The goal now is to push for promotion and bring Kenya back where it belongs in the World Series,” he said.

As Shujaa prepare for the decisive World Championship Series, all eyes will be on the Kenyan side as they aim to complete their journey back to rugby sevens’ top table.
