Kabras coach Katywa says they have changed approach to stay on top

Kabras coach Katywa says they have changed approach to stay on top

Defending Kenya Cup champions Kabras Sugar RFC have changed their style of play this season as they push for a fifth straight title, head coach Carlos Katywa has revealed.

Speaking after finishing top of the Kenya Cup table, Katywa said this season has been more challenging compared to their previous successful campaigns.

Kabras are chasing history with a fifth consecutive crown, but the coach admitted the team is now in a different phase, with many players reaching the peak of their careers.

“Winning four titles in a row came at different stages depending on the players’ age and time at the club,” said Katywa.

He said managing player fitness has been one of the biggest concerns this season, as some players are no longer as energetic as before.

“We knew some of our players were at their peak age, and it was going to be difficult because their energy levels would drop,” he added.

Katywa also pointed to a mental challenge within the squad, saying success over the years can sometimes make players too comfortable.

“We expected a comfort zone mentality where some players might think things will be easy,” he said.

To deal with this, the technical bench and team leaders focused on taking one game at a time throughout the season.

“Our target was to approach every match step by step,” he said.

On the field, Kabras made key tactical changes, moving away from their traditional physical style to a more creative and flexible approach.

“We reduced the physical play and added more flair to our game,” Katywa explained.

The changes seem to have worked, with Kabras finishing top of the standings and heading into the semi-finals as favourites.

They now join KCB Rugby, Menengai Oilers and Nondescripts in the playoffs, with the semi-final draw expected later this month.

As the title race enters its final stage, Kabras will be hoping their new approach keeps their winning run alive.
