Sports journalists in Kenya have being urged to report carefully on doping issues to protect athletes, uphold integrity, and avoid legal risks.
The Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK) has called on the country’s media fraternity to ensure precision when reporting on doping cases.
Speaking at the sixth ADAK Anti-Doping Media Workshop in Mombasa, Acting Director of Standards & Compliance Dr. Martin Yauma stressed that accurate reporting is crucial because anti-doping matters are scientifically complex, legally sensitive, and significant.
“This workshop is designed to demystify anti-doping regulations, clarify legal frameworks, and strengthen collaboration between ADAK and the media,” said Yauma.
“Journalists are not just reporters; they are custodians of public trust and partners in promoting clean sport.”
The two-day conference, organised in partnership with the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK), aims to equip journalists with technical knowledge and investigative tools to navigate the evolving anti-doping landscape. Participants are learning about the 2026 WADA Prohibited List, testing procedures, Therapeutic Use Exemptions, and other key anti-doping processes.
James Waindi, SJAK President, emphasised the critical role of sports journalists in safeguarding Kenya’s sporting reputation. “Accurate reporting is more than professional development; it is a safeguard for our athletes and our nation’s sporting future,” said Waindi.
Over the past six seasons, ADAK and SJAK have partnered to help journalists understand anti-doping terminology and dynamics, ensuring that news coverage is factual, ethical, and balanced.
Yauma added that precise reporting will also help reduce legal risks for media houses and strengthen public confidence in Kenyan sport.
