Government issues fresh update on Kipchoge Keino Stadium progress

The government has issued a fresh update on the ongoing Sh3.5 billion renovation of Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, saying the project is moving steadily as plans continue to turn the facility into a world-class sports venue.

Principal Secretary for Interior Raymond Omollo shared details of the progress, highlighting key construction works currently underway at the stadium.

According to Omollo, contractors are working on road construction within the complex, installing reinforced concrete beams on the southern stand, and setting up structural formwork. The Western VIP pavilion is also nearing completion, with only the canopy installation remaining.

Once complete, the stadium’s seating capacity will increase from 10,000 to 15,000. The facility will also feature FIFA-standard infrastructure, including modern floodlights, improved media facilities, and international-standard changing rooms.

Omollo said the transformation of the stadium reflects the government’s commitment to investing in sports as a driver of national pride, talent development, and economic growth.

He noted that the upgraded venue will serve as a key training and backup site for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host with Tanzania and Uganda.

The project has so far employed about 400 workers, providing jobs and boosting local economic activity in Eldoret and the wider North Rift region.

Named after legendary Kenyan athlete Kipchoge Keino, the stadium is the only public facility in the North Rift with a synthetic track. It has long served as a training base for elite distance runners and remains a key symbol of Eldoret’s identity as the “City of Champions.”

Beyond sports, the upgraded stadium is expected to boost sports tourism, benefiting hotels, transport operators, and other service providers in the region.

Valued at approximately Sh3.5 billion, the renovation is expected to be completed by the end of the year, in time to support preparations for the continental tournament in 2027.

The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is also working to ensure safety and emergency preparedness measures are fully integrated into the facility to host major local and international events.
