3K FC beat Fortune Sacco to win ‘Majirani Derby’

3K FC beat Fortune Sacco to win ‘Majirani Derby’

3K FC claimed bragging rights in the much-awaited ‘Majirani Derby’ after edging Fortune Sacco 2-1 in a thrilling National Super League clash played at Moi Stadium on Sunday.

The important victory pushed 3K FC to second place on the league table and kept alive their hopes of earning promotion to the Kenyan Premier League.

The derby atmosphere was electric long before kick-off, with fans of both neighbouring clubs filling the stadium to capacity. Social media had been buzzing for days ahead of the match, and the contest fully lived up to expectations as both sides battled fiercely for pride and points.

Despite enjoying home support, 3K FC were forced onto the back foot in the opening stages, with goalkeeper Emmanuel Kutwa producing several crucial saves to keep Fortune Sacco at bay.

Fortune’s top scorer Collins Mwangi caused problems for the 3K defence with his physical presence and dangerous runs, but the hosts defended well to limit his chances in the first half.

At the other end, Mark Kithome stood out for 3K FC with his pace and dribbling ability, constantly troubling the Fortune backline.

After a tense midfield battle with few clear opportunities, 3K finally broke the deadlock in the closing moments of the first half. Kithome burst down the left wing before delivering a low cross that Ronald Karerwa calmly converted to hand the hosts a 1-0 lead at the break.

3K FC made the perfect start to the second half, doubling their advantage less than a minute after restart. Michael Amwayi floated a free kick into the box, and Newton Njue reacted quickest to head home past goalkeeper Malvin Nderitu, sparking celebrations among the home fans.

Fortune Sacco responded in the 68th minute when Collins Mwangi headed in a free kick delivered by Victor Matete to reduce the deficit and set up a tense finish.

The match was briefly stopped in the 85th minute after crowd trouble erupted in the Eastern Stand occupied by Fortune fans. Police officers, stewards, and match commissioner Andrew Juma quickly intervened to restore calm after angry supporters protested against an officiating decision.

When play resumed, 3K FC remained composed and defended strongly until the final whistle to secure all three points in the heated derby encounter.
