Tunisian football giants Étoile Sportive du Sahel have been hit with a transfer ban by FIFA after failing to pay Gor Mahia Sh5.1 million for defender Alphonce Omija.
Omija completed his move to the Tunisian side last year in a deal that was expected to boost Gor Mahia financially. However, months later, the Kenyan record champions are yet to receive the full agreed transfer fee, forcing them to escalate the matter to FIFA.
Following investigations, FIFA ruled in favour of Gor Mahia and imposed an immediate ban on Étoile Sportive du Sahel. The sanction prevents the club from registering any new players, both domestically and internationally, until the debt is fully cleared.
The global football governing body has also warned that the punishment could be extended to cover up to three consecutive transfer windows if the Tunisian side fails to settle the outstanding amount within the stipulated time. This could significantly affect the club’s competitiveness, especially during key recruitment periods.
For Gor Mahia, the ruling comes as a major relief as the club has been pushing to secure its rightful payment. The funds are expected to support player salaries, operations, and future transfers at the club.
Omija, who has since continued his career abroad, remains one of the notable Kenyan defenders to secure a move outside the country, underlining the growing visibility of local talent on the international stage.
