AFC Leopards head coach Fred Ambani has challenged his players to make history by ending the club’s 28-year wait for a league title with a win in Sunday’s crucial Mashemeji Derby against rivals Gor Mahia.
The match could have a big impact on the Kenyan Premier League title race. Gor Mahia currently lead the standings with 58 points, three points ahead of second-placed AFC Leopards.
A win for Leopards would see them draw level with their bitter rivals and revive their hopes of winning their first league title since 1998.
Speaking during training at Marist International University in Karen, Ambani said he has reminded his players about the club’s long wait for success and urged them to grab the opportunity.
He said he was proud to have been part of the last AFC Leopards team that won the league title in 1998 and believes the current squad can also write their own history.
Ambani said winning the derby would give his team confidence and belief that they can go all the way in the title race.
The former Zoo Kericho coach also praised his players for showing a positive attitude in training despite their recent 3-0 defeat to Kenya Police.
He said the team is focusing on mental, physical and tactical preparation ahead of one of the biggest matches of the season.
With pride, points and the league title race at stake, fans are expected to witness a thrilling battle between Kenya’s biggest football rivals.
