Gabby Thomas hails Omanyala for his sub-10 run ahead of Kip Keino Classic

Gabby Thomas hails Omanyala for his sub-10 run ahead of Kip Keino Classic

American sprint star Gabby Thomas has praised Ferdinand Omanyala after the Kenyan speedster returned to top form by running under 10 seconds for the first time in more than a year.

Omanyala produced an impressive performance at the Addis Ababa Grand Prix on April 18, winning the men’s 100m in 9.98 seconds.

Africa’s fastest man finished ahead of American Christopher Borzor, who clocked 10.16 seconds, while Italy’s Chituru Ali came third in 10.26 seconds.

Speaking ahead of the Kip Keino Classic set for Friday at Nyayo National Stadium, Thomas said Omanyala’s comeback has inspired many athletes around the world.

She said the Kenyan sprinter showed great strength by staying focused during difficult moments and proving he can return to his best.

“Honestly, what you did last week was very inspiring for many athletes. We got to see how you can struggle for a while, but continue to keep your head up and keep pushing and come back and prove to yourself and to the world that you are capable,” said Thomas.

The multiple Olympic champion over 200m said Omanyala’s return is a reminder that athletes face both good and difficult moments in their careers.

Thomas also shared her own struggles after battling an Achilles injury last year.

She said the injury affected her both physically and mentally and made her realise that setbacks are part of an athlete’s journey.

“Last year, when I was dealing with my Achilles injury, there were many moments when I didn’t feel like myself because it was painful and it was hard physically and mentally,” she said.

“I had to understand that as an athlete, there will always be highs and lows and that is part of the journey. You have to learn how to rise again.”

Omanyala will be one of the main attractions at this year’s Kip Keino Classic as Kenyan fans hope he can continue his strong form on home soil.
