Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohamed has challenged Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania to think beyond hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and focus on leaving a lasting legacy for the region.
Speaking during the CAF AFCON 2027 preparations workshop in Kampala, Uganda, Hussein said the tournament presents a rare chance for East Africa to prove it can successfully host Africa’s biggest football event.
He said Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania must work together to ensure the tournament becomes a success not only for the three nations but for the entire continent.
“This is a unique opportunity to showcase what East Africa can deliver. Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania must think beyond AFCON 2027. This is not just an opportunity for individual countries, but for the entire region and Africa,” said Hussein.
The FKF boss praised CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe and CAF General Secretary Samson Adamu for supporting the joint bid, saying their leadership has given the host nations confidence as preparations intensify.
Hussein noted that what happens after the tournament will be just as important as the event itself, insisting that improved infrastructure and football development should remain as long-term benefits.
“What happens after 2027 will define us. The legacy we leave behind for future generations will be critical,” he added.
He also called on all stakeholders involved in the preparations to remain committed and ready to make sacrifices to ensure East Africa hosts one of the best AFCON tournaments in history.
The workshop brought together leaders from CAF, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania as the three nations continue preparations for the continental showpiece.
Uganda’s Sports Minister Peter Ogwang reaffirmed his government’s commitment to providing resources needed to host the tournament, while FUFA President Moses Magogo said East Africa is ready to seize the moment.
CAF General Secretary Samson Adamu warned that time is running out, saying the host nations must move with speed to meet key deadlines ahead of the tournament.
AFCON 2027 will mark the first time East Africa hosts the continental competition, with Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania set to stage the tournament under the PAMOJA partnership.
