Gor Mahia have expressed confidence ahead of their highly anticipated Kenyan Premier League clash against rivals AFC Leopards in the 99th edition of the Mashemeji Derby set for Sunday at Nyayo National Stadium.
Speaking after training at Kasarani Annex, Gor Mahia assistant coach Bismark Kobi-Mensah said the team has done enough homework on AFC Leopards and believes they are well prepared for the crucial encounter.
The Ghanaian tactician said the technical bench has closely studied AFC Leopards’ style of play, identifying both their strengths and weaknesses ahead of the match.
Kobi-Mensah noted that the focus is now on fine-tuning the squad in training and ensuring the players are ready to execute their game plan on match day.
Despite the confidence, the coach admitted Gor Mahia faces challenges after failing to win their last three matches and struggling to score goals.
He said improving their attack remains a key priority before the derby.
The assistant coach also pointed to poor concentration in the opening minutes of their previous meeting with AFC Leopards, where Gor Mahia lost 1-0 in the first leg played in December last year.
He emphasised the need for mental strength and tactical discipline as they seek revenge against their longtime rivals.
Gor Mahia currently top the Premier League table with 58 points, just three points ahead of second-placed AFC Leopards, making Sunday’s derby a crucial title race showdown.
