Junior Starlets head coach Mildred Cheche has named a strong final squad of 23 players for Kenya’s crucial clash against Namibia in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
Cheche has largely kept faith with the core of players who have featured in previous campaigns, showing trust in their experience as the team looks to make another step towards the global stage.
Among the key players retained in the squad are Lindey Weey, Brenda Awuor, Mwanakombo Bakari, Grace Mumo, Faith Boke, Brenda Achieng and Fleviah Khatenje. Their experience is expected to play a big role in guiding the team during the two-legged tie.
Bevarline Awuor, who recently featured for the U-20 side in the World Cup qualifiers against Ethiopia, has been named team captain. Brenda Awuor will serve as her assistant.
There is also a return for Tabitha Wambui, who has risen through the ranks from the U-15 team, highlighting the growing pathway for young talent in Kenyan football.
Speaking after naming the squad, coach Cheche said selection was based on quality and hunger to win.
“We focused on players with strong technical and tactical ability. This is a more aggressive team and many of them are eager to perform and win,” she said.
The Junior Starlets have been preparing through intensive training and friendly matches against top FKF Women’s Premier League sides, as they aim to be ready for the challenge ahead.
Kenya will face Namibia in the first leg on April 12 in Windhoek before hosting the return leg on April 18 at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi.
With a balanced squad and strong preparation, the Junior Starlets will be hoping to secure a good result and keep their dream of World Cup qualification alive.
