Kenya is set to use the upcoming FIFA Women’s Series as a stepping stone to unlock the full benefits of hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Football Kenya Federation president Hussein Mohamed says the tournament, set for Nairobi, is more than just football it is a chance for Kenya to show the world it is ready for bigger events like AFCON 2027.
Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania will co-host AFCON 2027, and Hussein believes early tournaments like the FIFA Women’s Series will help the country prepare while already bringing economic and social benefits.
“This is not just a tournament, it is a platform to showcase Kenya to the world,” said Hussein, emphasising the importance of hosting international matches ahead of AFCON.
The FKF boss says the Women’s Series will help boost tourism, with visiting teams, officials and fans expected to spend on hotels, transport and local businesses. He adds that it will also promote women’s football and give local players international exposure.
Beyond football, Hussein notes that such events help improve infrastructure, test stadium readiness, and strengthen Kenya’s ability to host global competitions.
He pointed to the success of other countries like Morocco, which gained massive economic impact from hosting AFCON, as proof that Kenya stands to benefit in a similar way.
The Women’s Series will also act as a learning experience, helping organisers identify areas to improve before AFCON 2027. Lessons from CHAN 2024 and this upcoming tournament are expected to shape better planning and execution.
Hussein has called for support from both government and private sector to ensure Kenya fully benefits from these opportunities.
As the countdown to AFCON 2027 continues, Kenya is now using the FIFA Women’s Series not just to grow the women’s game, but to build confidence, attract investment and position itself as a strong host on the global stage.
