Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja yesterday flagged off the county’s boxing team ahead of their trip to Uganda, where they will represent the city in a regional competition.
Speaking at City Hall during the send-off, Sakaja lauded the team’s dedication and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to nurturing talent across various sports. He announced a major initiative to construct fully equipped social halls in all 17 sub-counties, each featuring a boxing ring and other necessary training facilities.
“We are taking sports seriously. Apart from constructing stadia, we will now build social halls and equip them with boxing rings in all our sub-counties to ensure that boxing is also well supported,” Sakaja stated.
The Governor also revealed plans to expand the scope of the Sakaja Super Cup, which has primarily focused on football, to include other disciplines such as boxing. He underscored the importance of sports in fostering unity, promoting healthy lifestyles, and offering young people a viable career path.
“Sports bring people together, and apart from promoting a healthy lifestyle, it is an opportunity to give our youth a chance to make it a career, earn a living, and fight drug abuse,” he added.
Several sports facilities, including Woodley, Mwiki, and Kihumbuini stadiums, are under construction, signalling a broader effort to strengthen Nairobi’s sports sector.
