Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) women’s basketball team has shifted to high gear as they turn their focus to the Women’s Basketball League Africa (WBLA), set for December 5–14 in Egypt.
The national league champions are determined to improve on past performances and make a big statement on the continental stage.
Assistant coach Samuel Ocholla says the team is already deep in training as they adapt to fresh tactics and work to correct key weaknesses seen during the recent Zone Five Qualifiers in Nairobi, where KPA finished third to secure their WBLA ticket.
“We have already started training, and I’m confident things will go well. A new coach is coming in, and it will be interesting to see how the team adjusts to the new tactics. I believe we’ll deliver a stronger performance and even better results moving forward,” Ocholla said.
One of the team’s biggest focus areas is improving their third-quarter mindset.
Ocholla pointed to many painful moments during the qualifiers, where KPA surrendered big leads after halftime.
“In our last match against APR of Rwanda, we were leading but ended up losing by 10 points. In the semifinals against REG, we were up by 11 points going into the third quarter but allowed them to outscore us 29–17 and we eventually lost by 17 points.
“Even in the third-place playoff, we led by 20 points at halftime but still struggled in the third quarter and were pushed into overtime — something that should not happen,” he said.
With lessons learned, a new tactical approach, and strong motivation, KPA hopes improved discipline, sharper focus, and better mental strength will push them to the next level as they face Africa’s best.
The WBLA tournament will run from Friday, December 5 to Saturday, December 14 in Egypt. KPA believes this is their chance to show progress and fight for greater success on the continental scene.
