Thika Stadium will be the centre of Kenyan athletics in mid-January as it hosts the second leg of the Athletics Kenya (AK) Track and Field Weekend Series.
The two-day meet will run from January 15 to 17, 2026, and will feature a full programme of races and field events after the first leg in Mumias was cancelled.
Athletics Kenya said the Thika meet will include all the events that had been planned for the Mumias leg, which was called off due to the poor condition of the track.
“The event will serve as the second meet of the 2026 Track and Field season and will have a full programme following the cancellation in Mumias,” AK said in a statement.
The first leg of the series was supposed to take place on November 8 and 9 at the Mumias Sports Complex, but the bad turf forced organisers to postpone it.
Athletes taking part in Thika will be fighting not just for pride but also for cash prizes. Winners in each category will receive Sh20,000, second place will earn Sh15,000. while third place will go home with Sh10,000.
The weekend series is also important as it forms part of preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2.
Athletics Kenya has also confirmed that national trials for the Club Games will be held later in the new year, giving athletes more chances to qualify for major competitions.
