KCB Bank finished second at the African Women’s Volleyball Club Championship after losing 3-1 to hosts Al Ahly in Thursday night’s final in Cairo, Egypt.
KCB started strongly and looked on course for a third continental title after taking the opening set 25-22 in front of a loud home crowd at the Al Ahly Sports Complex.
The Kenyan champions showed great determination early in the match as they frustrated the Egyptian side with strong attacks and solid defending to silence sections of the home fans.
However, Al Ahly responded strongly in the second set and dominated KCB to win 25-15 and level the match.
The Egyptian giants continued their fine form in the third set, beating KCB 25-20 despite a spirited fight from the Kenyan side.
KCB struggled to recover in the fourth set as Al Ahly maintained control and sealed the match with a 25-16 victory to lift the title on home soil.
The win saw Al Ahly claim a record 11th African women’s club title, backed by strong home support in Cairo.
Despite missing out on the trophy, KCB can take pride in a strong campaign that saw them reach the final and prove once again they remain one of Africa’s top volleyball clubs.
The Japheth Munala-coached side came into the tournament hoping to win their third continental crown after previous triumphs in 2006 and 2022.
