The Kenya Lionesses made a strong start to the Rugby Africa Women’s Cup Performance Division campaign after beating Uganda Lady Cranes in a thrilling East African derby at the RFUEA Grounds on Saturday.
Kenya produced a dominant display, especially in the second half, as they outclassed Uganda with powerful attacking play and solid teamwork.
The Lionesses opened the scoring through Moreen Muritu after Janet Okello made a brilliant run through the Ugandan defence before setting up the try. Sinaida Mokaya added the conversion to give Kenya an early lead.
Uganda responded with a converted try to level the scores, but Kenya quickly regained control. Another try and a powerful finish from Freshia Oduor stretched the Lionesses’ advantage to 17-7.
Uganda failed to make use of a penalty chance, and Kenya punished them immediately. Debutant Tracy Montex crossed the line for another try after another impressive move involving Okello.
The visitors added three points before halftime, but Kenya still went into the break comfortably ahead.
After the restart, the Lionesses continued their dominance. Faith Livoi powered over for another try before Mokaya converted successfully to extend Kenya’s lead.
Kenya’s forwards also impressed with a strong rolling maul that pushed the hosts beyond the 30-point mark as Uganda struggled to cope with the pressure.
Freshia Oduor later scored her second try of the match, while Mokaya added the extras to complete an excellent team performance for the hosts.
The victory gives the Kenya Lionesses a perfect start to the Rugby Africa Women’s Cup campaign ahead of their next match on Wednesday.
