Kenya national sevens team Shujaa endured a difficult start at the 2026 Hong Kong SVNS, falling to back-to-back defeats against Australia and New Zealand in the opening Pool C matches at the Kai Tak Sports Park.
Kenya began their campaign with a 14-5 loss to Australia, before suffering a heavier 28-12 defeat to New Zealand later on Friday. The results leave Shujaa with a tough task ahead as they look to keep their hopes alive in the tournament.
Facing New Zealand in their second match, Shujaa struggled to contain the fast-starting New Zealand, who struck early to take control of the game. Two quick converted tries gave New Zealand a 14-0 lead, exposing gaps in Kenya’s defence.
Shujaa, however, showed resilience just before halftime. A well-worked move saw Samuel Asati combine with Kevin Wekesa, who powered through to score and reduce the deficit to 14-5 at the break.
In the second half, New Zealand extended their lead with another converted try to make it 21-5. Kenya responded with a promising attack as Vincent Onyala linked up with Asati, who set up Nygel Amaitsa for a try, narrowing the score to 21-12.
Despite the brief comeback, defensive lapses once again cost Shujaa. New Zealand capitalised on a slow reaction at the back to score their fourth try and seal a 28-12 victory.
With two losses, Shujaa must now win their final Pool C match against USA Eagles on Saturday morning to stand a chance of reaching the quarter-finals or improving their position for the classification rounds.
Kenya will be hoping to sharpen their defence and take their chances as they aim to bounce back and finish the tournament on a strong note.
