Kenyan runner John Korir has made history at the 2026 Boston Marathon after breaking a 15-year-old course record and earning a huge cash reward of about Sh25.6 million.
Korir delivered a stunning performance to win the 130th Boston Marathon on Monday in a record time of 2 hours, 1 minute and 52 seconds. His run broke the previous record of 2:03:02 set in 2011, making him one of the fastest marathon runners in history.
The race was competitive in the early stages, with Ethiopia’s Milkesa Mengesha setting a strong pace. He led at the halfway mark, but the race changed at the famous Heartbreak Hill. Korir pushed hard on the climb and broke away from the leading group.
From there, he controlled the race and crossed the finish line on Boylston Street 55 seconds ahead of Tanzania’s Alphonce Simbu.
Korir’s victory came with big rewards. He earned $150,000 for winning the race and an extra $50,000 bonus for breaking the course record, bringing his total earnings to $200,000, which is about Sh25.6 million.
This win also continues the Korir family’s strong legacy in Boston, after his brother Wesley Korir won the race in 2012.
In the women’s race, Sharon Lokedi successfully defended her title with a strong performance, finishing in 2:18:51.
