Kenya’s motorsport history is set for a new milestone as EV Explorers prepare to compete in this year’s Rhino Charge with the country’s first fully electric off-road competition vehicle.
The event will take place on May 30 in Samburu County, bringing together drivers, engineers, and conservationists in support of environmental protection efforts led by Rhino Ark Charitable Trust.
The EV Explorers team, sponsored by White Cap through Kenya Breweries Limited, is aiming to make history by completing the tough competition using a locally built electric 4x4 vehicle.
Team leader Timothy Kabiru says the project is both about racing and protecting the environment. He explains that the team first joined the Rhino Charge years ago using petrol-powered vehicles, but later decided to return with a cleaner and more sustainable solution.
Last year, the team debuted their electric vehicle and managed to complete several checkpoints before mechanical problems forced them to retire. Since then, they have redesigned and strengthened the vehicle, improving the drivetrain, transfer system, and performance control.
Kabiru says the team is now more prepared and hopeful of finishing the full course this year, even though competing with an electric vehicle in such a tough environment is still a big challenge.
Beyond the race, EV Explorers hope their project will encourage more innovation in electric mobility in Kenya and show that local engineers can build advanced, sustainable machines.
The 2026 Rhino Charge will once again combine adventure and conservation, as competitors battle rough terrain while raising funds and awareness for environmental protection across Kenya.
