Defending champion Piers Daykin will be the man to watch as the Equatorial Classic Rally gets underway in Taita Taveta County this weekend, with a competitive field of 28 cars ready for action.
Daykin, who won last year’s edition alongside navigator Lloyd Destro, has already arrived in the country and is set to defend his title in a Datsun 280Z. However, the champion says he is approaching this year’s race with a different mindset—focusing more on control than aggression as he faces a tougher and more experienced field.
The three-day rally, running from May 1 to May 3, has attracted a strong mix of local and international drivers, setting up an exciting battle across the rugged terrains of Taita Taveta.
Among those expected to challenge Daykin are seasoned names like Ian Duncan and Carl Tundo, both known for their experience and consistency in motorsport.
According to Clerk of Course Riyaz Ismail, preparations are complete and all cars have undergone strict safety and technical inspections ahead of the race. The rally will kick off with a ceremonial flag-off at Mwatunge grounds before drivers head into a series of demanding stages.
Competitors will navigate through iconic rally routes including Lumo Community Wildlife Conservancy, Lualenyi Ranch, and Mgeno Conservancy, covering long distances that will test both speed and endurance.
With the defending champion under pressure and a strong field ready to challenge, fans can expect a thrilling contest as the Equatorial Classic Rally takes centre stage in Kenya’s motorsport calendar.
