Kenya’s 800m star Emmanuel Wanyonyi is set for another major test after being confirmed for a star-studded race at the Stockholm Diamond League on June 7.
The Olympic, World and Diamond League champion will face some of his biggest rivals in what promises to be one of the most competitive 800m races of the season.
Wanyonyi will line up against Canada’s Olympic silver medalist Marco Arop and Algeria’s Olympic bronze medalist Djamel Sedjati, both of whom have pushed him hard in recent years.
The race will also introduce a new challenge for the Kenyan star, with teenage World Indoor champion Cooper Lutkenhaus expected to make his mark against the experienced field.
Former world 1,500m champion Jake Wightman and Australia’s Peter Bol have also been confirmed for the race.
Wanyonyi heads into the Stockholm event with strong memories after setting a world-leading time at the same meet last season. The victory was one of five wins that helped him secure a third straight Diamond League title in 2025.
The Kenyan has been dominant in the two-lap race, winning 12 Diamond League races in recent years and establishing himself as the man to beat in the men’s 800m.
However, Wanyonyi knows the challenge ahead will not be easy after suffering surprise defeats in Rabat and Lausanne last season.
The Stockholm showdown will be the first of back-to-back high-profile races, with the same athletes expected to meet again in Oslo just three days later.
The 2026 Wanda Diamond League season begins in Shanghai on May 16 before ending with the finals in Brussels in September.
