Kenya's Junior Starlets are through to the third round of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup qualifiers after eliminating Uganda on the away goals rule following a goalless draw at Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday.
The result was enough for coach Mildred Cheche's side to advance after securing a valuable 1-1 draw in the first leg in Kampala. Emily Adhiambo's crucial away goal in Uganda proved decisive as Kenya booked their place in the next stage of the qualifiers.
The match was closely contested, with Uganda's Teen Cranes making a strong start and creating several chances in the opening half. Immaculate Achen came close to scoring early in the game after a defensive mistake by Kenya, but her effort went over the bar.
Uganda controlled much of the possession in the first half and continued to put pressure on the Kenyan defence. However, goalkeeper Mishel Okoyo and captain Beverline Awuor stood firm to keep the visitors from finding the breakthrough.
Kenya gradually grew into the match and created a few opportunities of their own, with Faith Boke and Grace Mumo leading attacks. Despite their efforts, both teams went into the halftime break locked at 0-0.
The Junior Starlets returned for the second half with greater urgency. Emily Adhiambo nearly scored early after the restart, but her shot was deflected for a corner.
As the game became more intense, both sides battled hard in midfield, knowing that a single goal could decide the tie. Uganda came close several times, but Kenya's defence remained solid.
One of Kenya's best chances arrived late in the game when Beverline Awuor's powerful header struck the crossbar before Uganda cleared the danger off the goal line.
Uganda also threatened, with Joan Namakula missing a golden opportunity after goalkeeper Okoyo spilled a free-kick inside the box.
Neither side could find a goal before the final whistle, but Kenya's away goal from the first leg proved enough to separate the teams.
The Junior Starlets will now face the winner between Tanzania and South Africa in the third round as they continue their bid to qualify for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup.
