Benni McCarthy has admitted he would be willing to coach South Africa’s national football team if given the opportunity in the future.
The Harambee Stars head coach made the remarks during an interview with Kick-Off Magazine, where he addressed growing rumours linking him with the Bafana Bafana job.
McCarthy said coaching his home country would be a great honour, insisting it is a role many coaches would dream of taking.
“I think a lot of people will be interested in the job to coach Bafana. But if I’m asked, of course I would. It’s my country. It’s the national team,” said McCarthy.
The former Manchester United attacking coach is currently in charge of Harambee Stars and remains under contract until the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite showing interest in the South Africa job, McCarthy revealed that he still misses club football and would prefer a return to club management after his current national team role ends.
The 47-year-old explained that international football has long breaks between matches, something he says he does not enjoy compared to the busy schedule in club football.
McCarthy has been working on rebuilding Harambee Stars as Kenya prepares to co-host the 2027 AFCON alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
