Ngetich, Ebenyo set to defend Sirikwa Classic crowns

World Cross Country champion Agnes Jebet Ngetich and bronze medalist Daniel Simiu Ebenyo will return to action at the Sirikwa Classic Cross Country on Saturday, February 14, as they defend their titles at the Lobo Village course in Eldoret.

The two Kenyan stars are expected to headline a high-quality field in what promises to be one of the biggest cross-country races of the season.

Ngetich was dominant at last year’s event, producing a strong and controlled run to win the senior women’s 10km race in 32 minutes and 42 seconds. Her performance confirmed her growing status as one of the world’s best distance runners.

She heads into this year’s Sirikwa Classic in top form after opening her 2026 season with victory at the World Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, USA.

Ngetich led from start to finish to win gold in 31:28, underlining her readiness for another big performance on home soil.

Speaking during the race launch in Eldoret on Tuesday, Ngetich praised Athletics Kenya for supporting the event and giving young athletes a chance to grow.

“I thank Athletics Kenya for investing in this event because it helps young athletes develop their talent. It will also be Valentine’s Day, and I am looking forward to receiving flowers at the finish line,” she said.

On the men’s side, Ebenyo will be chasing a third straight Sirikwa Classic title after winning last year’s race in 29:57. He said the tough Lobo Village course has played a key role in shaping his career.

“Winning the Sirikwa Classic has boosted my confidence and prepared me for bigger races. This competition helped me grow and played a big role in my preparation for the World Cross Country Championships,” Ebenyo said.

At the World Cross Country Championships, Ebenyo claimed a bronze medal for Kenya after finishing third in 28:45 in a race won by Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo.

Beyond the athletes, the Sirikwa Classic continues to grow thanks to strong sponsorship. Absa Bank remains the title sponsor for the 2026 edition, committing Sh8 million to the event. The bank’s support has helped elevate the race to World Athletics Gold-level status, placing it among the top cross-country events globally.

With top athletes, a demanding course, and strong backing, the 2026 Sirikwa Classic is set to deliver another exciting day of world-class athletics in Eldoret.
