Kenya finally reclaimed the African men’s 10,000m crown after Kelvin Chesang produced a brilliant performance to win gold at the African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana on Wednesday.
Chesang crossed the finish line in 28:30.44 in a thrilling race that saw him edge out Ethiopia’s Hagos Eyob Gared, who settled for silver in 28:30.57. Fellow Kenyan Silas Senchura completed the podium after clocking 28:32.66 to take bronze.
The victory ended Kenya’s 14-year wait for the continental title in the event, with the country last winning gold through Kenneth Kipkemoi during the 2012 championships in Porto-Novo, Benin.
Chesang’s triumph highlighted a strong showing by Team Kenya on the track as the country continued to collect medals in Accra.
In the mixed 4x400m relay, the Kenyan quartet of Samuel Chege, Laoline Aoko, Dennis Masika and Maureen Najala combined well to secure bronze after posting a time of 3:17.94. Nigeria claimed gold in the event with a winning time of 3:16.44.
Earlier in the evening, Kenyan decathlete Edwin Too also impressed after winning silver, adding to Kenya’s medal haul at the championships.
The latest results capped a successful day for Team Kenya as the athletes continued to shine on the continental stage in Ghana.
