Kenya’s marathon sensation Sabastian Sawe is set to return to the Berlin Marathon in September, where he will defend his title following his historic world-record performance at London Marathon on May.
The 31-year-old stunned the athletics world last month after becoming the first man to run an official marathon in under two hours, clocking an incredible 1 hour, 59 minutes and 30 seconds at the London Marathon.
Sawe will now shift his focus to Berlin on September 27, aiming to produce another fast time on one of the quickest marathon courses in the world.
Speaking ahead of the race, Sawe said he was determined to prepare well and honour the event after receiving an invitation from the organisers.
The Berlin Marathon is famous for producing record-breaking performances, with nine men’s world records set on the course between 1998 and 2022.
Sawe won last year’s Berlin title in 2 hours, 2 minutes and 16 seconds despite difficult hot conditions, recording the fastest marathon time in the world in 2025.
Another Kenyan legend, Eliud Kipchoge, still holds the Berlin course record after running 2:01:09 in 2022, which at the time was a world record.
Organisers say nearly 60,000 runners from around 160 countries are expected to take part in this year’s race, making it one of the biggest marathon events globally.
All eyes will now be on Sawe as the Kenyan star looks to continue rewriting marathon history in Berlin.
