Athletics Kenya has announced plans to build a new modern headquarters in Kasarani, marking a major step towards improving the management and growth of athletics in the country.
The federation’s president, Jackson Tuwei, revealed the plan during a ceremony at State House Nairobi, where Kenya celebrated marathon star Sabastian Sawe following his historic performance in London.
For decades, AK has operated from Riadha House, located next to Nyayo National Stadium. The facility has been at the heart of Kenya’s athletics success since the 1980s, becoming a symbol of the country’s dominance on the global stage.
However, Tuwei says the time has come to move to a bigger and more modern space.
He announced that the federation has already secured a 20-acre piece of land in Kasarani and raised Sh237 million to kick-start the project. The new facility is expected to provide better working space and improved services for athletes and officials.
“We want to move from the congested Riadha House to a modern home in Kasarani,” said Tuwei. “This project will give our athletes a proper home and help us meet the growing demands of the sport.”
Tuwei also called on the government for support to complete the project, saying it is key to strengthening Kenya’s athletics system.
President William Ruto, who led the event, praised Sawe for his historic marathon achievement, describing it as a proud moment for the country and the world.
The planned headquarters is seen as part of a wider effort to modernise athletics management in Kenya and maintain the country’s position as a global powerhouse in distance running.
