Korir makes history as first African Technical Delegate at World Relays

Kenya’s Barnaba Korir has made history after being appointed as the first African Technical Delegate at a global World Athletics event.

Korir, who serves as Youth Development Director at Athletics Kenya and First Vice President of National Olympic Committee of Kenya, was part of top officials during a technical briefing held at the UB Stadium in Gaborone.

He worked alongside senior World Athletics officials, including Head of Competition Management Pierce O’Callaghan and Senior Competition Manager Luca Verrascina, ahead of the upcoming global event.

Korir’s appointment marks a major milestone for Africa, highlighting the continent’s growing role in international athletics leadership.

He said the recognition is not just personal, but a result of the combined efforts of athletes, officials, and federations across Africa.

The appointment comes just before the World Athletics Relays, which will bring together top relay teams from around the world for its eighth edition.

The event is expected to attract elite competition, as countries battle for glory on the global stage while also preparing for future major championships.

Korir’s new role is seen as a big step forward for African representation in world sport, sending a strong message that the continent continues to rise both on and off the track.
