Gor Mahia moved a step closer to winning another Kenyan Premier League title after beating rivals AFC Leopards 1-0 in the 99th edition of the Mashemeji Derby at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.
Midfielder Alpha Onyango was the hero for K’Ogalo after scoring the winning goal late in the match to hand his side a crucial victory over Ingwe in a tightly contested derby.
The win helped Gor Mahia open a six-point gap at the top of the league standings ahead of AFC Leopards, strengthening their chances of winning a record-extending league title this season.
Both teams started the match cautiously, knowing what was at stake in the title race. Gor Mahia looked more dangerous in the first half, with Ebenezer Adukwaw testing AFC Leopards goalkeeper Levis Opiyo Katasi early before setting up Patrick Essombe, who missed two clear chances.
AFC Leopards struggled to create meaningful chances as Gor Mahia’s defence remained strong throughout the match. Goalkeeper Bryne Omondi had a quiet afternoon as Ingwe failed to trouble him.
Young defender Bryton Onyona impressed for Gor Mahia and played a key role in the winning goal after providing the assist for Onyango’s strike.
Onyango controlled the midfield with a strong performance and capped it off with a late goal that sent Gor Mahia fans into celebration.
The victory also helped Gor Mahia avenge their first-leg defeat to AFC Leopards and put them firmly in control of the league title race.
