Wafalme Stars shift focus to securing ninth place finish as World Championships dream dashed

Kenya’s Wafalme Stars have been knocked out of contention for a podium finish at the CAVB Men’s African Nations Volleyball Championship after losing 3-1 to Algeria in the Round of 16.

The defeat also ended Kenya’s hopes of securing one of Africa’s qualification places for the 2027 FIVB World Championship.

However, Wafalme Stars’ campaign in Tunisia is not over, with the national men’s volleyball team now set to compete in the classification matches for positions nine to 13.

Kenya joins Gambia, Chad, DR Congo and the Central African Republic in the classification bracket after the five teams failed to progress to the quarter-finals.

DR Congo have already opened their classification campaign with a 3-0 victory over Gambia, while Central African Republic dropped into the same stage after a 3-0 defeat to defending champions Egypt.

Wafalme Stars will therefore be looking to finish the tournament strongly under head coach Gideon Tarus.

Kenya have finished ninth in the last two editions of the African championship, in 2021 and 2023.

At the 2023 championship in Egypt, Kenya secured ninth place after beating Senegal 3-0 before overcoming Ghana 3-2 in the classification matches.

Wafalme Stars will now aim to reproduce that form and once again finish among the top teams outside the medal positions.

The immediate focus will be on winning their remaining classification fixtures as Kenya seeks to improve or at least maintain its recent ninth-place record on the continent.
