Wambua will use Safari Sevens tourney to trim Shujaa squad ahead of HSBC Division Two campaign

Wambua will use Safari Sevens tourney to trim Shujaa squad ahead of HSBC Division Two campaign

Kenya Sevens head coach Kevin Wambua will use this weekend’s Safari Sevens to assess his players before reducing his provisional squad from 33 to 25 as Shujaa step up preparations for the new HSBC Sevens Series Division Two campaign.

Wambua says the highly competitive national sevens circuit has provided an opportunity for emerging players to challenge for places in the national team.

He says the new faces have continued to impress during training, increasing competition for positions ahead of the international season.

The Safari Sevens will be held from October 9 to 11 at Nyayo National Stadium, with Kenya drawn in Pool A alongside Uganda, SportPesa Fast Forward 7s and Scotland.

Wambua says the squad has already completed about 10 training sessions since assembling, with the players showing determination and a willingness to improve.

The coach is expected to name two squads later this week as Shujaa continue building towards the HSBC Sevens Series.

Wambua says the immediate focus is to develop a competitive side, while the bigger target is to secure promotion to Division One and qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
