Junior Starlets face USA test in World Cup tie as they strive to hit back after China loss

Kenya’s Junior Starlets will be looking to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup alive when they face the United States in their second Group E match in Rabat, Morocco, on Thursday 9pm East African Time.

The Kenyan youngsters head into the encounter under pressure after suffering a 3-0 defeat to China in their opening match on Monday, leaving head coach Mildred Cheche with the task of rallying her side for a stronger performance.

Against the USA, the Starlets will need greater attacking sharpness and defensive discipline as they seek their first points of the tournament and aim to remain in contention for a place in the next round.

The match also presents an opportunity for Kenya to build on the experience gained during their maiden appearance at the global tournament in 2024, when they competed in the Dominican Republic.

During that campaign, the Starlets finished third in Group C with three points. They lost to England and North Korea before registering a 2-1 victory over Mexico, demonstrating their ability to compete at the highest level.

Cheche will now be hoping her players can respond positively to their opening defeat and deliver a performance that restores confidence ahead of their final group fixture against Samoa on October 25.

With the group-stage campaign entering a crucial phase, Thursday’s encounter could prove decisive in shaping Kenya’s chances of progressing beyond the first round for the first time in the team’s history.
