Kenyan basketball star Ariel Okall Koranga has been named the winner of the prestigious Basketball Africa League (BAL) Ubuntu Trophy for his outstanding work off the court.
The veteran Nairobi City Thunder forward received the award at the BK Arena in Rwanda during the BAL playoffs, becoming the latest African player to be recognised for using sports to change lives in the community.
Okall was honoured for his efforts in empowering women and young athletes through basketball programs across Kenya and Africa. Through his Lightning Swish Basketball Club and other community initiatives, he has helped more than 300 young people access mentorship, education, and professional opportunities.
The award also recognised his support for the deaf basketball community and his commitment to breaking barriers through sports.
The BAL Ubuntu Trophy, presented in partnership with the Qatar Foundation, celebrates players who make a positive social impact away from the basketball court. Ubuntu means “I am because you are,” a message that reflects unity, humanity, and helping others.
As part of the recognition, Okall’s community projects will receive a 10,000 US dollar grant to continue supporting youth and women through basketball development programs.
He beat three other finalists to win the continental award, becoming the sixth-ever recipient of the BAL Ubuntu Trophy.
His achievement has been widely celebrated in Kenya’s basketball circles, with many praising him for proving that success in sports is not only measured by trophies and points, but also by the lives changed in the community.
