Kenyans celebrates Madina Okot’s WNBA draft selection

Kenyan basketball is celebrating a major milestone after rising star Madina Okot was selected in the first round of the 2026 WNBA Draft by the Atlanta Dream.

Okot was picked 13th overall during the draft ceremony held in New York on Monday, marking a historic breakthrough for the fast-rising center who only began playing basketball in 2020.

Her journey to the top has been nothing short of remarkable. From a beginner just a few years ago, Okot has grown into one of the most exciting young talents in women’s basketball.

Standing at 6-foot-6, she developed into a modern centre with strong presence in the paint and an impressive ability to shoot from distance.

Before turning professional, Okot played college basketball for the South Carolina Gamecocks women's basketball, where she enjoyed a standout final season.

She averaged 12.8 points and led the Southeastern Conference with 10.6 rebounds per game, recording multiple double-doubles throughout the season.

Her performances helped the Gamecocks achieve an impressive 36-4 record and reach the Final Four, underlining her impact on the team. In total, she registered 22 double-doubles, ranking among the best players in the country.

Okot’s draft selection is also significant for her college program. She became one of the few post players from South Carolina to be picked in the first round in recent years, highlighting her quality and influence on the court.

Her rise has not been without challenges. Okot had hoped to extend her college career, but her request for an extra year of eligibility was denied. However, she leaves the college stage with her reputation stronger than ever.

South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley praised Okot’s determination and growth, saying her journey reflects courage and hard work both on and off the court.

What makes Okot stand out even more is her versatility. Despite her height, she has developed a reliable outside shot, hitting an impressive 44.8 percent from beyond the arc this season — a rare skill for a player in her position.

Analysts believe the Atlanta Dream selected her not just for her current performance, but also for her huge potential. The team is expected to benefit from her defensive strength and all-round game as she continues to improve.

Her selection places her among the top talents in the 2026 draft class and puts Kenyan basketball firmly on the global map.

For Okot, this is more than just a personal achievement — it is an inspiration to many young athletes back home. From humble beginnings to the world’s biggest women’s basketball league, her story proves that dreams are valid with hard work and belief.
