Five years after lifting their last Kenya Cup title, members of KCB Rugby’s famous 2021 squad are still making a big impact in Kenyan rugby — this time from the sidelines, boardrooms, and coaching benches.
KCB defeated rivals Kabras RFC 28-25 in September 2021 under coach Curtis Olago to win the Kenya Cup with a squad packed with experience and quality.
Today, many of those players have retired from active rugby but continue to influence the game in different roles.
Former captain Andrew Amonde has become one of the top rugby coaches in the country. He now serves as KCB Rugby head coach and also works with Kenya Sevens as the Strength and Conditioning coach.
Peter Kilonzo has also remained at the club after retirement and currently works as KCB’s Performance Analyst and Defense Coach.
Darwin Mukidza, one of the club’s most reliable backs during his playing days, moved into coaching after retiring from international rugby and is now the backs coach at Nondescripts RFC.
Oliver Mangeni, who won five Kenya Cup titles with KCB, is also involved in coaching and currently handles lineouts at Kenya Harlequin.
Rocky Aguko has taken up a management role at KCB and now serves as the club’s team manager.
While some former stars have shifted into technical and management roles, others are still active on the pitch.
Samuel Asati remains one of KCB’s key players and has developed into one of the best scrum-halves in the country. Isaac Njoroge and Vincent Onyala are also still playing important roles for the Bankers.
Elsewhere, former fly-half Johnstone Olindi relocated to Canada, while Nick Ongeri and Steve Wamai moved into the corporate world after retirement.
As KCB prepare for another Kenya Cup final showdown against Kabras, the legacy of the club’s 2021 champions continues to inspire the current squad both on and off the field.
