Kenya bags four titles at ITF/CAT East Africa Junior Tennis Championships

Kenya finished the ITF/CAT East Africa Junior Individual Championships in style after winning four titles as the tournament ended on Saturday at the Nairobi Club.

The strong performance saw Kenya clinch the overall championship in a competition that attracted junior players from nine countries across the region.

The home team opened its title run in the girls’ under-14 category, where Bathsheba Ogamba defeated fellow Kenyan Paula Ouko 6-2, 6-4. The victory marked Ogamba’s first-ever zonal title and a proud moment for the young player.

Kenya then added the boys’ under-14 crown after Indiatsi Olembo delivered a dominant display, beating Burundi’s Abdoul Nduwimana 6-0, 6-2 to lift the title.

An all-Kenyan final highlighted the girls’ under-16 category, with Nancy Kawira overcoming Selina Ahoya 6-2, 6-3.

Kawira secured her second zonal title, completing an impressive back-to-back achievement after winning on consecutive days.

The final title came in the boys’ under-16 event, where Jeff Okuku wrapped up a successful week by edging out Burundi’s Dan Muterampuhwe 7-6(4), 7-5 in a closely contested final.

Burundi finished second in the girls’ under-16 category, with Uganda taking third place. Tanzania followed in fourth position, while Rwanda finished last. In the boys’ under-14 event, Tanzania claimed second place as Uganda settled for third. Rwanda finished runners-up in the boys’ under-16 category, with Somalia coming in third.

Tennis Kenya praised the players for their discipline and fighting spirit, saying the results reflect the country’s strong junior development system.

“Tennis Kenya is very proud of our junior players for their commitment, resilience, and sportsmanship. These results show the continued investment in junior development and competitive exposure,” the statement read.
