World champions Wanyonyi and Chebet retain SOYA crowns

Kenya’s middle-distance star Emmanuel Wanyonyi has once again been crowned the country’s top male athlete after retaining his title at the 2025 Sports Personality of the Year Awards (SOYA).

The 22nd edition of the prestigious awards was held at Uhuru Gardens on Friday night, celebrating Kenya’s best performers in sports. The event was graced by legendary Ethiopian long-distance runner Haile Gebrselassie.

Wanyonyi successfully defended his crown after a remarkable season on the track, highlighted by his victory in the men’s 800m at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

The Olympic champion clocked an impressive championship record time of 1:41.86 to secure gold, confirming his status as one of the world’s best middle-distance runners.

In the SOYA men’s category, Wanyonyi beat strong competition from marathon star Sabastian Sawe, who finished second after winning both the London and Berlin marathons, while Harambee Stars forward Ryan Ogam came third following his impressive performances for the national team.

On the women’s side, double Olympic champion Beatrice Chebet also retained her title after a dominant year that saw her win double gold in the 5,000m and 10,000m at the World Championships. She finished ahead of track stars Faith Kipyegon and Faith Cherotich.

The awards once again highlighted Kenya’s strength in athletics, with Wanyonyi leading the way after another outstanding season on the global stage.
