KCB host Nairobi United in historic Premier League clash

KCB host Nairobi United in historic Premier League clash

KCB host Nairobi United on Thursday in a landmark Kenyan Premier League match at Kasarani Stadium, as the two sides meet in the top flight for the first time.

Both teams head into the encounter eager to return to winning ways after mixed recent results, with the fixture expected to be closely fought given how evenly matched they have been this season.

The Bankers, are seventh on the league table with 22 points from 15 matches. A win could lift them as high as third place, keeping them firmly in the title race.

Nairobi United, nicknamed the Naibois, sit 11th with 20 points from 13 games and know that victory would see them climb to seventh, with a game in hand still to play.

Neither side has tasted victory in their last two matches. KCB lost 3–1 to Shabana before settling for a goalless draw against Kenya Police. Nairobi United, on the other hand, were beaten 2–0 by AFC Leopards and then shared a 1–1 draw with Ulinzi Stars.

Although this is their first-ever Premier League meeting, the two teams are no strangers. Last season, Nairobi United eliminated KCB from the Mozzart Bet Cup in the Round of 16, winning 6–5 on penalties after a goalless draw. That result underlines how tight today’s contest could be.

Both clubs will be without their head coaches on the touchline. KCB coach Robert Matano is expected to miss the match following the passing of his wife earlier this week.

Nairobi United are also in transition after the departure of Nicholas Muyoti to Kenya Police, with technical director Salim Ali set to take charge on an interim basis.

January signings could also play a key role. KCB have boosted their squad with the additions of David Sakwa, Francis Kahata and defender Vincent Okello.

Nairobi United have strengthened with local players Roy Okal, John Njuguna and Steve Biko, alongside Ugandans Titus Ssematimba and Mustafa Kizza, and Rwandan midfielder Muhadjiri Hakizimana.

The statistics show just how close the teams are. Both have scored 16 league goals this season, with KCB conceding 14 and Nairobi United 15.

Kick-off is set for 4pm, with fans expected to witness an exciting and competitive encounter as history is made at Kasarani.
