Michael Olunga Foundation Academy (MOFA) have quickly shifted focus to their next National Super League assignment after a frustrating draw denied them a chance to close in on the league leaders.
MOFA, coached by Charles Warinda, were held to a 1-1 draw by Kisumu All Stars in a tense Nyanza derby played on Wednesday at Moi Stadium, Kisumu. The result left the academy side still within touching distance of the top but disappointed not to make better use of their chances.
Speaking after the match, Warinda praised his players but said attention must now turn to the weekend. “I appreciate the effort of the boys. We must now regroup for another challenging outing against Mwatate United away in Taita Taveta on Sunday,” he said.
Warinda admitted the game against his former side was never going to be easy. He said Kisumu All Stars started strongly and forced MOFA to change their approach early on. “They were aggressive in pressing in the opening minutes, which made us adjust our systems, and that led to our goal,” he noted.
However, missed chances proved costly. Laban Otieno failed to convert a clear opportunity, and MOFA were punished when Kisumu All Stars equalised just before the break.
“We would have buried the game, but we missed an open chance. In the second half, we had more of the ball but could not find the back of the net,” Warinda added.
MOFA now travel to face bottom-placed Mwatate United, who are winless in their last four matches under coach Evans Mafuta. Mwatate suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Mombasa United in midweek.
After the latest round of matches, MOFA dropped to fourth place with 24 points, level with third-placed 3K FC.
Mombasa United moved up to second on 25 points, while Migori Youth remain top with 29 points despite a 1-0 loss to a resurgent Kibera Black Stars.
In other National Super League results, Gucha Stars claimed their first away win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Naivas, thanks to a goal from Nigerian import Umar Iliayasu.
Equity Bank handed Darajani Gogo a second straight defeat with a 2-0 win, while Luanda Villa and Nzoia Sugar played out a goalless draw.
